1864 (Jun. 28) Montevideo, Uruguay to New York, N.Y., folded June 28th letter sent unpaid with Montevideo (6.30) origin cds, London (8.4) backstamp with black "48/cents" debit h.s. to U.S., carried by Inman Line City of Baltimore from Queenstown Aug. 4 to New York arriving Aug. 16, "New York Am. Pkt. Aug 16" exchange cds with "90" due rating h.s. and "U.S. Notes / 225" depreciated currency h.s., Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. Letter carried from Montevideo to Rio de Janeiro by Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. branch steamer "Mersey" and by "Magdalena" from Rio to Southampton. New York straightline U.S. NOTES marking shows the highest premium seen on any depreciated currency mails of 250%, which occurred in July and August 1864.
