1864 "Narrow Escape" from the Confederate Raider Alabama off the Cape of Good Hope. 3 page enclosure datelined "Steamer King Kiang, Cape Town, March 29, 1864" written on aboard on route to China: We had a most narrow escape from the Alabama as we came into port. (Raphael) Semmes learned that we were coming in, and he hurried off but was a half hour to late…the "Arab" (American whaler) has come in safely, so that it is doubtful if the wicked craft is waiting for us., cover addressed to Wheeling, W. Va. franked with 1861 3¢ rose tied by target with "Acushnet, Mass" cds below; portion of cover missing at top, Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. $0 (Image)
