1863 (Jul. 27) Buenos Ayres, Argentina to Salem, Mass. via London, folded letter with Buenos Ayres (7.28) and London (8.31) backstamps, black "80/cents" debit h.s. to U.S., carried by Galway Line Adriatic from Galway Sep. 1 to New York arriving Sep. 12, "New York Br. Pkt. Sep 12" exchange cds with "90" cent due h.s. in coin and "U.S. Notes 111" depreciated currency h.s., Very Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter carried from Buenos Ayres to Southampton by RMS steamer "Oneida". London applied 80/CENTS debit marking for transit fees owed to G.B. New York used two rate markings to show the postage due in coin and in depreciated greenback currency. Letters carried by Galway Line steamers are seldom seen as the Line had great difficulty maintaining its required sailing times under its brief contract to carry mails. $0 (Image)
