1863 (Apr. 6) Gridley, Ill. to Woodlesford, England, mourning cover with manuscript "Gridley Ills U.S.A., Apl. 6/63 Paid 24 cts" postmark, Chicago red "3 / Cents" exchange rating, carried by Allan Line Nova Scotian from Portland Apr. 12 to Londonderry arriving Apr. 24, Leeds (4.28) arrival backstamp, Very Fine. Estimate $150 - 200. Gridley is located on the Logansport Peoria & Burlington Railroad in central Illinois seven miles west of the junction of the St. Louis Alton & Chicago Railroad. The letter was carried by rail to Chicago, where the unusual red 3/CENTS credit marking was applied. The letter was placed in a closed mail bag for England. From Chicago it was carried on the Michigan Central Railroad to Detroit, Canadian Grand Trunk Railroad to Montreal, and St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad to Portland.
