1862, 5¢ red brown, two singles, tied by cogwheel cancels on orange cover to South Dartmouth Mass., sharp strike of "San Francisco Cal Dec 23 1862" cds; light water staining around stamps, reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F., a particularly rare use. Scott No. 75  Estimate $300 - 400. Ashbrook noted in the "Special Service" on pages 311-12, 579, that the earliest recorded example of "Chestnut Brown" shade from San Francisco was Dec. 20th 1862.
