1862 (Jan. 16) Plymouth Mass. to Melbourne, Victoria, orange cover bearing three 3¢ rose (65) singles and three 10¢ green (68) singles, all cancelled by matching target cancels, matching "Plymouth Ms Jan 16" cds, sharp red "Boston Am. Pkt. Paid Jan 18" exchange backstamp with red crayon "12" cent credit rating, carried by Inman Line Kangaroo from New York Jan. 18th to Liverpool Feb. 2nd, red London (2.3) transit cds, red Melbourne (4.17) arrival backstamp, manuscript "2" rating; stamp faults, cover reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F. Estimate  $300 - 400. Prepaid for the 39¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles effective January 1, 1857 to December 31, 1867. The 12¢ credit to Great Britain was incorrect and should have been 18¢ for 12¢ British transit and 6¢ French transit. The U.S. should have retained only 21¢ for 5¢ U.S. postage plus 16¢ transatlantic packet. $0 (Image)
