1861 (Dec. 25) Colima, Mexico to Larressore, France, blue folded letter with "Colima" postmark and prepaid "2" reales backstamp, "New-York Br. Pkt. Jan 15, 1862" backstamp and "20" cent debit to France, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York Jan. 15 to Queenstown arriving Jan. 26, red Calais (1.28) entry cds and "12" decimes due h.s., Very Fine, Scarce letter from Mexico under U.S.-French convention of 1857. Estimate  $200 - 300. Payment in Mexico for internal fees only. Otherwise, letter unpaid. New York debited France 20¢, the rate from the west coast of Mexico; however, convention allowed U.S. only 10¢ transit fee from Mexico. Paris marked 12 decimes postage due, the single rate from Mexico via U.S. $0 (Image)
