1861 (Dec. 17) Walnut Creek Oh. to Konolfingen, Switzerland, light buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by manuscript "Walnut Creek O. Dec 17" postmark with "unpaid 27c" notation below, black "N. York Brem. Pkt. '3' Dec 21" exchange debit cds, carried by NGL Line Hansa from New York Dec. 21st to Bremerhaven arriving Jan. 5th, blue "Amerika uber Bremen, 22" circular handstamp, blue ms. "22" restatements, Frankfurt (1.7) and Basel (1.8) backstamps, red crayon "100" rappen due rating, Very Fine and interesting use. Estimate  $400 - 600. Although notated as "unpaid 27c" rate, the Bremen mails rate had been lowered to 19¢ effective October 1, 1860 to December 31, 1867, and since this cover was under paid it was treated as totally unpaid. Also, since this use was in December 1861, the 3¢ dull red #26 was demonetized at this time. This was the maiden return voyage of NGL Line "Hansa" from New York to Bremerhaven. $0 (Image)
