1861 (Dec. 11) Havana, Cuba to London via Old Point Comfort, Va., folded cover with Old Point Comfort (12.16) cds and "Due" circular h.s. with manuscript "48" due rating, "N. York Br. Pkt. '10' Dec 19" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Dec. 20 to Queenstown arriving Jan. 1, London (1.2) backstamp with manuscript "2/-" shilling due rating, Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300. Letter carried privately from Havana, Cuba to Old Point Comfort, Virginia on board the U.S. Government charter steamship Constitution, which had called at Havana for coals on the return from a troop carrying voyage to Ship Island. Letter entered U.S. mails at Old Point Comfort as an unpaid, double rate letter to England. Unusual routing and very uncommon use of the circle due marking of Old Point Comfort.
