1860 (Dec. 21) Monaghan, Ireland to Baltimore, Md. via Portland Packet, cover sent unpaid, "Monaghan DE 21 '60" origin cds, "3/cents" G.B. debit to U.S., carried by Allan Line North American from Londonderry Dec. 21 to Portland arriving Dec. 31, "Portland Me. Am. Pkt. '24' Dec 31 1860" debit exchange cds, Very Fine, a scarce Portland packet use. Estimate $150 - 200. From November 1859, the Canadian Allan Line had a contract to carry U.S. mails. In May 1860, the Allan Line steamers began to call at Londonderry (port city of Moville) enroute from Liverpool to Quebec or Portland (winter months).
