1859 (Mar. 6) Antwerp, Belgium to San Francisco, Cal., folded letter with Anvers (3.6) origin cds with matching "PD" framed h.s. and pencil "31" décimes prepaid rating on reverse, purple manuscript "2/5" credit 2s5d to G.B., red London (3.7) transit, San Francisco black "Paid" h.s., Very Fine and choice, a scarce Belgium letter to San Francisco. Estimate  $300 - 400. Letter prepayment in pencil on reverse showing 2 decimes retained by Belgium and 29 décimes (equivalent to 2s5d) due to U.K. Letter carried by RMSP steamer "Medway" from St. Thomas to Colon and PMSS Co. steamer from Panama City to San Francisco. Since letter conveyed in British mail, it was paid to destination in California under U.S.-U.K. convention. San Francisco marked PAID handstamp and numerals "783" in red crayon to show mail box number of recipient. $0 (Image)
