Nov 10" cds, carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York Sep. 29 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 10, London (10.11) backstamp, red "Insufficiently Pre-Paid" and "Returned for Postage" framed h.s., various manuscript ratings, Very Fine, a rare letter to Sumatra. Estimate $300 - 400. Letter originally paid 5¢ for British open mail rate to Penang, Straits Settlements and marked for Marseille route. London marked 1s7d debit to Penang and then realized letter addressed to Padang, Dutch East Indies for which postage had to be prepaid. London debited U.S. 16¢ for transatlantic fee to return letter, which was sent back to Boston for proper postage. Letter prepaid 33¢ in Boston for Southampton route to Dutch East Indies. New York credited 28¢ to U.K. Letter carried three times across the Atlantic by the Cunard Persia. Letter subsequently carried by P&O steamers Ceylon to Alexandria, Simla to Ceylon, and Pekin to Singapore. Dutch N.I.S.M. steamer Koningen den Nederlanden carried it to Dutch East Indies.
