Estimate  $300 - 400. "Ariel" carried mails under contract to the Postmaster General on this first Vanderbilt mail voyage to Europe. This contract replaced that of the Ocean Line, whose mail contract expired on 30 June 1857. Ocean Line’s "Washington" departed New York for Bremen on this same day but carried no contract mails.
