1857 (Feb. 6) Charleston, S.C. to Cadiz, Spain, printed Herckenrath, Wragg & Co circular with "Paid" straightline h.s., carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Boston Feb. 11 to Liverpool arriving Feb. 21, two spindle hole affecting cover, Very Fine. Estimate  $100 - 150. When newspaper rate to most European destinations was reduced in April 1853 from 4¢ to 2¢, Spain was not included and the 4¢ rate remained until early 1860. The 4¢ paid in Charleston was marked against "Charge key box 25" belonging to Herckenrath, Wragg & Co. The Charleston postal clerk struck the black handstamp PAID. Boston did not mark the 2¢ credit to the U.K. as did New York. Spanish postage due is not shown but was ½ real. $0 (Image)
