1854 (c., Jun. 9) Charleston S.C. to Gen. Samuel Gadsen, U.S. Minister Mexico, buff cover front originally bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) single, four margins tied by blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Jun 9" cds with inverted date and day slugs, then held back and additionally franked with the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark. is uncommon and 1¢ blue (9) single, margins to slightly in, tied by blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Jun 19" cds, endorsed "pr. Steamer via New Orleans", clear "Vera Cruz / Jul 10" boxed two-line datestamp and matching "4" reales due rating handstamp, Fine and intriguing item, the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark is uncommon. Estimate  $300 - 400. This cover is part of a correspondence addressed to Gen. Gadsden while he was entrusted with the mission of ending the incipient boundary dispute with Mexico. They are all postmarked from Gadsden's hometown of Charleston S.C. Agreement was reached in 1854 between Gadsden and General Santa Ana of Mexico, whereby 45,535 square miles of disputed territory should be ceded to the United States, in exchange for which the United States paid $10 million and further agreed to abrogate all claims for damages due to Mexican raids on the American side of the border between 1848 and 1853. $0 (Image)
