1854 (Sep. 22) New York N.Y. to Mexico City, Mexico, cover front bearing 1¢ blue (9), margins to cutting, and three 3¢ dull red (11A) singles, margins to touched, tied by two bold strikes of "New-York Sep 22" cds addressed to James Gadsden, Minister of the United States in Mexico, endorsed via "New Orleans", oval "Vera Cruz, 4 October 1854" and matching "4" reales due rating handstamp for inland postage; small erosion hole and corner mend, F.-V.F., prepaid for the 10¢ American packet rate. Estimate  $200 - 300. In 1853, Gadsden was appointed by the U.S. Government as the new American minister to Mexico, with instructions to purchase more land from Mexico for the prospective railroad route across southernmost New Mexico and Arizona, and to clear up the possibility of disputes over the location of the boundary between the two countries. $0 (Image)
