1854 (Mar. 26) New Orleans, La. to Christiania, Norway, blue folded letter with red "New Orleans La. Mar 26" cds with matching "Paid 5" rate h.s., "N. York Br. Pkt. '23' Apr 5" exchange debit cds, carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Apr. 5 to Liverpool arriving Apr. 18, Aachen (4.19) backstamp with blue manuscript "13" debit, Hamburg (4.20) backstamp with red crayon "17½" debit, Very Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter intended to be sent in British open mail, but New York exchange office sent it as an unpaid letter in Prussian closed mail to Aachen, then to Hamburg where it was turned over to the Danish post office in Hamburg. Prussia debited Hamburg 13 silbergroschen due Prussia. Hamburg converted this debit to 17½ Lubeck schillinge (equivalent to 35 sk.Special Printing. Norwegian currency). Norwegians added 7 sk.Special Printing for transit to Denmark, 6 sk.Special Printing. for sea postage to Norway, and 6 sk.Special Printing. Norwegian inland postage. Total postage due was marked on reverse, 54 sk.Special Printing. Although New Orleans sender addressed letter to Sweden, it was correctly sent to Norway. $0 (Image)
