1853 (May 5) Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y., printed circular with imprinted red 1d newspaper tax stamp and bearing Great Britain 1841 1d red, large margins except just clear at right, tied by "486" grid cancel, carried by Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool May 7 to New York arriving May 19; file fold at center affects 1d red, otherwise Very Fine. Scott No. GB #3 Estimate $200 - 300. Since 1837, Prices Current and Commercial Lists published regularly could be sent by British packet for one penny each. Each business desiring to use this special rate had to be recorded at the Post Office in London. W.A. & G. Maxwell & Co. printed their prices current on stamped paper (revenue tax stamp impressed with their name) to send the circulars free through the British mails. The additional overseas postage was paid with a one penny adhesive. The U.S.-G.B. Treaty did not address circulars specifically, but It is believed they were treated as newspapers with 2¢ to be collected in the U.S. $0 (Image)
