1853 (Aug. 19) Melbourne, Victoria to Nassau N.Y., buff cover bearing Victoria 1852, 3d blue, Ham printing, 3rd Die State (S.G. 11, Scott 3 var.), margins to slightly in, tied by two strikes of "1" Barred Oval of Melbourne, endorsed "S.S. Argo via Southampton" at top, manuscript "8" pence due rating and corresponding manuscript "16" cents debit to U.S., red London (10.30) transit backstamp, carried on Collins Line Baltic from Liverpool Nov. 2nd to New York arriving Nov. 14th, bold "New.York Am. Packet. Nov 14" exchange cds with matching "37" cents due rating handstamp, Very Fine. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 37¢ PRIVATE SHIP MAIL RATE FROM VICTORIA. The cover was sent at the 37¢ private ship rate from the United Kingdom that was effective July 1, 1849 to November 30, 1855. The rate was composed of 16¢ British transit (8d), 16¢ transatlantic packet and 5¢ U.S. postage. The cover was prepaid only the Victoria domestic postage of 3 pence. $0 (Image)
