1852 (Jan. 14) Pittsburgh, Pa. to Horb, Wurttemberg, folded letter with "Pittsburgh, Pa. Jan 16" cds with two strikes of red "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "20" prepaid rating, red "New-York Jan 24" exchange backstamp with "Paid Part" straightline struck, carried by Collins Line Atlantic from New York Jan. 24 to Liverpool arriving Feb. 4, red "America/uber Bremen" h.s. with blue manuscript "9" kr. due rating, Minden (2.11) and Horb (2.15) backstamps, Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300. "Atlantic" carried a Bremen Closed Mail to England on this voyage in addition to the regular British mails. New York marked PAID PART as only the Treaty rate to Bremen was prepaid. Since most Bremen Treaty mails were carried by steamer directly to Bremerhaven, closed mails via England and Belgium are uncommon. Because there were insufficient voyages to Bremerhaven for all the mails which accumulated in New York, the New York postmaster augmented these trips with closed mails via England for a few years. $0 (Image)
