Nov 21" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with manuscript "41" cent rating, additional red "New-Orleans La. Paid" circular h.s., red manuscript "36" cent credit to G.B., carried by Cunard Line Niagara from New York Dec. 4 to Liverpool arriving Dec. 17, red London (12.18) transit and oval "PP" h.s., Calais transit, Very Fine, this is the only recorded example of the 41¢ rate to Italy. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter prepayment included all transit fees to French-Kingdom of Sardinia border under 1843 Anglo-French convention. Since letter addressed to Minister of Foreign Affairs, no postage was due in Turin. Unrecorded New Orleans marking in red, "NEW-ORLEANS La./ PAID," the meaning of which is not understood since a separate PAID handstamp was also struck. $0 (Image)
