Lot No:270
Symbol:

1850 (Apr. 10) St. Louis, Missouri to Hannover, Germany, folded letter with red "St. Louis Mo. '10' Apr 10" cds with black "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "Part" rating, New York red "Too Late" h.s., carried by Cunard Line America from Boston May 1 to Liverpool arriving May 13, London (5.14) backstamp and manuscript "1/2" 1s2d debit to Hannover, red " 9 4/12 ENGLAND/ÜBER BREMEN" handstamp, May 8 arrival cds, some edgewear, F.-V.F. Estimate  $200 - 300. St. Louis collected only 10¢ for U.S. inland fee to New York and marked letter PAID/PART with handstamp and manuscript notation. This was how St. Louis normally marked mail intended to go by American packet to Bremerhaven. Apparently letter arrived after Ocean Line steamer left for Bremerhaven (20 April) so New York marked the red TOO LATE handstamp. Since letter paid at least 5¢ British open mail rate it was sent on next Cunard steamer from Boston in the British Open mail. Hannover marked red 9 4/12 ENGLAND/ÜBER BREMEN handstamp to show letter arrived from England under U.K.-Hannover convention of 1845, showing debit to Hannover of 9 1/3 gute-groschen (equivalent to British debit of 8d transatlantic fee + 6d British transit to Hannover= 1s2d). Hannover added 2 ggr. internal fee and marked letter for 11 ggr. 4 gpf postage due. $0 (Image)
