1849 (Feb. 19) New York, N.Y. to Crest, France, folded letter with New York "Part Paid" straightline and pencil "24" prepaid rating for American packet rate, carried by Ocean Line Hermann from New York Feb. 20 to Southampton arriving Mar. 10, red manuscript "13" accounting rate, red Boulogne entry cds with manuscript "20" decimes postage due rating, Crest (3.14) arrival backstamp; Very Fine, One other letter with similar markings is known from the same voyage. EstimateĀ $200 - 300. Letter paid the American packet rate and marked "Paid Part" as if it were going by the Bremen mail. Apparently, the new British open mail rate by American packet of 21Ā¢ was not considered for the mail on this voyage. Hermann put mail off while stopped in the Solent off the Isle of Wight near Southampton. Letter taken to London (not the usual route for the Ocean Line mail to France) and later entered France at Boulogne from Dover. Mail by this route from America was exchanged with France under Article 13 of the letter bill, which gave U.K. 3s4d per 30 grams or 10d per single rate letter. London usually marked COLONIES &c. ART.13 handstamp on this mail. The handstamp was not used on this letter, but a "13" was marked in the upper right corner, which is believed to indicate the same exchange rate category. $0 (Image)
