1848 U.S.-Great Britain Mails, Retaliatory Rates, group of 10 inbound and outbound covers comprising the following sailings: sixth, seventh, ninth (2), 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 21st, some better including one from Germany, double rates from Glasgow and London, a triple rate from London, some faults, F.-V.F., a scarce group. Estimate $750 - 1,000. During the Retaliatory Rate period the New York Foreign Mail Office treated incoming prepaid mail as Ship Letters. The packet rate of 24 cents was charged plus the appropriate inland rate with the New York Ship Letter arrival stamp applied.
