1848 (Oct. 2) Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York, N.Y., folded letter with red "Halifax, Paid, Oct 2, 1848, Nova Scotia" five-line handstamp and red manuscript "1/-" prepaid rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Halifax to Boston, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Oct 6" cds and red "29" due handstamp for the 24¢ retaliatory rate (in error as ship was 16¢) plus 5¢ inland fee, Very Fine, ship letter retaliatory rate usages are exceedingly rare. Estimate  $400 - 600. Retaliatory regulations imposed a 16¢ fee for letters brought in by British ship, the same charge as the British imposed (8 pence). The retaliatory ship letters are scarce since most mail was carried by contract steamships (24¢, 29¢ or 34¢ retaliatory fees) or American sailing vessels for which no retaliatory fee was charged. $0 (Image)
