1844 (Dec. 3) Newcastle-on-Tyne, England to Experiment Mills, Pa., folded letter with "Westgate" framed h.s. and "Newcaste-on-Tyne DE 3 1844" cds, red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid rating for packet fee, carried by Cunard Line Acadia from Liverpool Dec. 4 to Boston arriving Dec. 21, Philadelphia blue "20¾" rate h.s. crossed out and "Free" rating added, Very Fine, scarce transatlantic free usage. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter posted in Westgate Street receiving house, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Upon arrival in Philadelphia, letter marked for 20¾¢ postage due (2¢ ship and 18¾¢ inland fees) since letter in closed mail bag through Boston. When it was noticed that letter was addressed to a postmaster, the rate was crossed through and replaced by a manuscript "free." . $0 (Image)
