1840 (Aug. 25) Charleston, S.C. to Greenock, Scotland, folded letter with red "Charleston S.C. Aug 27" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with two large "25" rating h.s. for 25¢ steamship freight money fee and 25¢ inland postage, red New York (9.3) cds and matching "Too Late" handstamp, carried by Swallowtail Line "Roscoe" from New York Sep. 7 to Liverpool arriving Sep. 29, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and "8" pence due h.s. for ship fee, "Missent to Glasgow" framed h.s., Glasgow (9.30) backstamps, some docketing on front, Very Fine and remarkable use, This letter and one other mailed the same day in Charleston are the only two examples recorded of Charleston using handstamp "25" markings for freight money fees. Both letters were also missent to Glasgow. Estimate  $500 - 750. Letter prepaid 25¢ inland fee to New York (upper right) plus 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship (upper left). Letter intended for steamship President but arrived in New York too late for this vessel. New York marked handstamp "TOO LATE" and placed letter on next sailing packet to Liverpool, where postage due of 8d marked with handstamp for an incoming ship letter. $0 (Image)
