1839 (Nov. 29) Baltimore, Md. to London, England, folded letter with red "Baltimore Md Nov 29" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with magenta "25" and "18¾" ratings for 25¢ steamship freight money fee plus 18¾¢ inland fee to N.Y., endorsed at top left "Paid mail & ship postage", carried by British & American Steam Nav. Co. British Queen on 3rd return from New York Dec. 2 to London arriving Dec. 25, "Ship Letter/Gravesend" and London (12.26) backstamps, manuscript "1/" due rating, Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. Postage due consisted of 8d incoming ship fee plus 4d uniform inland fee, an experimental fee collected only during the 35-day period from 5 December 1839 - 9 January 1840.
