1839 (Dec. 10) Chambly, Upper Canada to Overton, England, folded letter with faint strike of "Chambly" circular postmark and manuscript "11th Dec" dating, prepaid red manuscript "1/11½" currency rating for 4½d Canadian inland, 11½d U.S. inland (18¾¢), and 7½d (12½¢) steamship freight money fees, red "Montreal L.C. DE 13, 1839" double circle date stamp with matching "Paid" h.s. with red manuscript "18¾" credit, carried by Black Ball Line Oxford from New York Dec. 19 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 11, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and "8" pence due h.s. for uniform ship fee, Very Fine, One of only two recorded freight money covers from Chambly. Estimate  $400 - 600. This letter is a very early example of the uniform ship fee that was effective January 10th, 1840, only the day prior to arrival. $0 (Image)
