1839 (Aug. 17) Port Hope, Upper Canada to Hannover, Germany, folded letter with red "Port Hope" circular datestamp with manuscript "17 Augt 39" dating, matching "Paid" h.s. with red manuscript "BP 9d, AP 18¾, PP 12½" rating for the prepayment of 9dcy Canadian postage to the U.S., 18¾¢ U.S. postage to New York and 12½¢ freight money fee for a sailing ship, Kingston cds and restatement of prepayment, red "New-York Aug 28" exchange cds, carried by Havre Line Sully from New York Sep. 1 to Havre arriving Sep. 24, blue Paris (9.26) transit backstamp, blue "6½" and red "12" ratings, F.-V.F., Only recorded freight money cover from Port Hope and only recorded freight money cover to Germany. Estimate $500 - 750. Since letter was going to Germany, New York postmaster placed it on a sailing ship that required no freight money fee (Havre Line).
