(Virginia City Pony Express) Wells Fargo & Co./Gold Hill Utah (Nevada Territory Use). Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 4-1) ties Wells Fargo 1863 25¢ blue (margins cut in to clear) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank to Placerville, California, entire with light vertical creases at center & a bit soiled, small corner nick at upper right & slight edge wear, top backflap missing, Fine. Scott No. 143L8  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. The preponderance of westbound Virginia Pony covers are addressed to San Francisco, which is not surprising since the premium service was intended to provide expedited communication between San Francisco and the Comstock. This usage to Placerville is unusual and appealing since Placerville was the western terminus of the Overland Pony that preceded the Virginia Pony. $0 (Image)
