Estimate  $200 - 300. American packet rate avoided by taking letter to steamship's letter bag. Washington put mail off while stopped in the Solent off the Isle of Wight near Southampton. Letter taken to Havre by auxiliary steamer and then by Thurn & Taxis post to Aachen, Prussia, where boxed "America per Havre" handstamp applied.
