(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Aug. 23) Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York N.Y., blue folded letter with red "Halifax, Nova Scotia, Paid, Aug 23, 1848" tombstone style postmark with red manuscript "1/1½" 1s1½d rating, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Halifax Aug. 24th to Boston arriving Aug. 26th, Boston red "29" cent retaliatory due rating; two file folds, Very Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. A scarce use from Halifax on Cunard Line steamers during the expensive retaliatory rate period. Letter was prepaid 1s1½d for 1s packet fee plus 1½d inland postage with Boston charging 29¢ retaliatory fee for the 24¢ packet fee plus 5¢ inland postage for under 300 miles to New York. $0 (Image)
