(Restored Rates) 1849 (Jan. 24) Strabane, Ireland to Philadelphia, Pa., cover endorsed "Packet from Liverpool", red London "Paid JA 25 1849" cds and red magenta "1/0" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Jan. 27 to Boston arriving Feb. 11, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Feb 12" cds and matching red "12" rating h.s. for the 10¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, a Very Fine restored rate use. Estimate $200 - 300. Letter posted at Lifford provincial receiving house of Strabane, Ireland. Letter carried on third of four Cunard mail voyages to the U.S. during six week period when pre-retaliatory rates were restored before U.S.-U.K. postal convention became effective. The vertical pencil slash just to the right of the postage due handstamp was probably made by the carrier service in Philadelphia since the letter was addressed to a street address in that city. $0 (Image)
