Cat No:11 var.

(Paper Varieties) 3¢ Dull Red, Type I, Silk Paper Variety, ample to large margins, sheet margin and centerline at right, small piece out of bottom right, tied by "Scion N.Y. May 10" cds on light buff cover to Cuba, N.Y.; cover corner faulty, Fine and very interesting and unique silk paper variety. Scott No. 11 var.  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. This stamp shows two distinct blue silk threads on each side of the 'button'. Less visible, but less discernible at two red silk threads to the right of the upper right rosette. This paper is apparently white-wove machine-made paper, the usual used for the printing of the 3¢ 1851-57 issue. According to Dr. Carroll Chase, "Paper is occasionally found that shows a foreign substance embedded in it, but because a really excellent quality was used, this happened but rarely." This stamp is from the left pane of plate 7 in the 1856 deep yellowish rose red shade. $0 (Image)
