(Packets/Inland Waterway Covers) Steamboat, of New York City (Skinner-Eno PM-SB 3), two strikes ties 1¢ blue, E. grill (86) on 3¢ pink (U59) entire to San Francisco Cal., manuscript "Steamer" endorsement at top; tiny tear at top and abrasion, Very Fine and scarce coastal waterway usage into San Francisco. Estimate  $400 - 600. Effective 7/1/1863 until 1882, the ship letter rate was double the regular postage, whether unpaid or prepaid. Steamboat letters were considered the same as ship letters. If the steamboat carrying the letter had a mail contract, it was entitled to a a 1¢ way fee. Evans notes on pg. 243 that…no prepaid or partially paid covers posted after 7/1/1863, and bearing the 1¢ Franklin have been recorded. $0 (Image)
