(New York via Bermuda to Cuba) U.S. Mail Steamship Fah Kee, shield handstamp struck on flap of 1866 folded letter datelined "St Jago de Cuba 24th July 1866" from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence to New York City, endorsed pr "Fah Kee", Brooks & Co. origin cachet, "N.Y. Steamship '10' Aug 3" arrival cds, Very Fine, Only eleven examples of this vessel cachet have been recorded, nine being struck on reverse. Milgram No. 434  Estimate $300 - 400. In 1865, Waydell & Co. were awarded the contract for the post road from New York via Bermuda to Santiago de Cuba. The single screw steamer "Fah Kee" of 699 tons built at Greenpoint N.Y. was employed on this service from October 1865 to mid 1868. $0 (Image)

(New York via Bermuda to Cuba) U.S. Mail Steamship Fah Kee, bold strike of "Feb 17, 1866, St. Jago" shield handstamp on flap of folded letter datelined "Cuba y Feb. 16 1866" from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence to New York City, Fah Kee arrived in New York on Feb. 25th (N.Y. Times) and black "Steamship 10" cent due rating circular handstamp, fresh and Very Fine. Milgram No. 434  Estimate $750 - 1,000. On August 10th 1865 Capt. John Sterling purchased for $65,000 the wooden screw steamer "Fah Kee" from the U.S. Quartermasters. He contracted with New York's Waydell & Co. to run a regular mail packet from New York to St. Jago de Cuba. The contract with Waydell was run under the provisions of the Foreign Mails act of 1845 but only lasted three years as opposed to the normal ten years of the Act. The vessel was sold to the Bermuda authorities in 1868. $0 (Image)
