(Greig's) City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ Black on Grayish, four large margins, faint manuscript. "X" cancel, tied by orange-red "New-York Aug. 8" government cds on 1842 folded letter to Union Corners, N.Y., with red manuscript "18¾" rating, Extremely Fine and choice, a gorgeous example of the first adhesive stamp issued in the Western hemisphere, ex-C. E. Chapman, Caspary; signed Colson. Scott No. 40L1 Estimate $2,000 - 3,000. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE STAMP ACTUALLY TIED BY THE NEW YORK POST OFFICE DATESTAMP AND ONE OF ONLY SIX INTER-CITY USAGES. An extremely late use of Grieg's stamp - he was appointed as an official letter carrier by order of August 1, 1842, effective August 16; during the last months as a private post, it appears that letters carried to the mails were not postmarked by the City Despatch Post. $0 (Image)
