"United States" Liverpool May 17 - New York May 31(Discriminatory Rate), folded letter from London, England to Petersburg, Va. with partial "Fenchurch St" straightline h.s. and red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid rating, the discriminatory rate established in June 1847 for the American packets, London (5.16) and Liverpool (5.17) cds, carried by Black Ball Line "United States" from Liverpool May 17 to New York arriving May 31, red "New-York 'Ship 12cts' May 31" cds, F.-V.F., Letter carried on maiden return voyage of Black Ball Line United States, which made only four round voyages for the Black Ball Line. One of three recorded covers carried on this voyage. Estimate  $500 - 750. Although this letter was intended for an American non-contract steamship, it was charged the same amount as letters sent on the American packet vessels. This is the only recorded American non-contract steamship cover recorded showing the discriminatory packet rate. . $0 (Image)
