1809 OCTORARO-PA to PHILADELPHIA & EASTON-PA, SFL addressed to lawyer Sam Ewing date-line OCTORARO on NOV14,1809 (Lancaster Cty with no post office until 1850), hand delivered the same day to RISING-SUN-PA (Philadelphia Cty with no post office until 1825) and again hand carried 11 miles to ALLENTOWN-PA where it was posted unpaid with delivery the 65 miles to PHILADELPHIA, rated COLLECT 10¢ (30-90 miles) with instructions after reading to forward the letter to John Ewing at EASTON-PA (Northampton Cty 1792), the letter was turned and reposted at PHILADELPHIA on NOV 16th and this time PREPAID 10¢ for the 70 mile rate to EASTON, interesting letter about land and "there are no negro boys to be had here", some travel wear and wax seal tear, a rare early route and very scarce turned cover with historic Slave related contents, F-VF est ($150+ US) (Image)

1861 RICHMOND-VA to WHITTLE'S-MILLS-VA & REPOSTED, a USA Nesbitt envelope #U10 pays the 3¢ letter rate from RICHMOND on APR28,1861 and addressed to Dr. Conway D. Whittle at WHITTLE'S-MILLS (87 miles), the cover was turned and reposted with a WHITTLE'S-MILLS manuscript cancel on OCT 18th, this was after the USA stamps were demonitized and a Confederate State #12 was applied to pay the 110 mile 10¢ rate to CHARLOTTESVILLE-VA, a great dual USA and CSA franking, Dr. Whittle's brother William Whittle was a Commodore in the Confederate Navy and we recommend additional research on the influential Whittle family during the Civil War, F-VF est ($300+ US) (Image)
