1850-51 Phalsbourg, France To Indiana. Folded letter franked with France 1849, 10c bister, two single + 1850, 40c orange paying 60 centimes per 7.5 grams French ship rate to the port of departure, tied by diamond grid handstamps with matching origin cds at left, "New York, 34cts, Jan 17" entry cds (24 cents per half ounce American packet rate, 10 cents per half ounce U.S. inland over 300 miles); light cover soiling and edge wear, F.-V.F., since the New York & Havre Line commenced service on October 5, 1850 and the direct rate changed on July 1, 1851, this rate was only in effect for nine months, during which only 5 sailings were west bound and 7 east bound, a difficult use particularly prepaid by stamps. Scott No. 1+7  Estimate $500 - 750. Sent via Havre Line - departed Havre on January 1st and arrived at Southampton on January 2nd and New York on January 16th of 1851. $0 (Image)
