Philippines Guerrilla Postal Service, 2c Blue Series 1943, Block of Six, tied on cover to Golden, Colorado with oval violet HC's dated Jan. 1, 1945, this cover was mailed by Col. Wendell Fertig, Commanding Officer of the 10th Military District, Guerrilla Forces headquartered at Esperanza in Agusan Province, Mindanao Philippines, to his wife in Golden, Colorado, The cover, apparently signed by Col. Fertig, was carried by Filipino Guerrillas to the Philippine coast where it was picked up by an American submarine and then taken to Australia. From there it was flown by an Army plane to Washington, D.C. and delivered to the Pentagon building and was forwarded on to Mrs. Fertig. She received the cover on April 20, 1945 almost four months after being mailed from the Philippines. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that Col. Fertig and his wife gave this cover along with some other philatelic items to a young Boy Scout by the name of Gary May (age 13) who lived in Denver, Colorado. May, in turn, put together a philatelic exhibit in 1948 to get his collecting badge and included this cover along with a number of other items. There are perhaps 20 covers known with guerrilla stamps affixed, most are singles, there is one cover with a pair and another with two singles, the cover being offered here is easily the largest known multiple on cover, the cover has faults and is missing the back flap, there is also some other damage which has been restored, given this cover was dragged through the jungles of the Philippines it is amazing it survived in any condition, some of the other covers are favor covers and were never actually mailed, there are perhaps three large sized covers which were used postally, Included with the cover is a mint block of four of the 2c Blue stamp along with some other collateral material relating to Gary May's exhibit which also includes the APS Convention First Award ribbon he won for this exhibit in Denver in 1948, there is also a black and white photograph of Gary May standing with his exhibit, Our research found that the pair on cover realized over $7,500 at auction several years ago. Some of the other favor covers have brought in the $2,000-5,000 range when they have come on the market, This auction marks the first time this important Philippine postal history item has ever been offered for sale at auction. Col. Fertig, in his important position as commander of the guerrilla forces, makes this cover a unique and important historical military item from WWII, (ENV 10,000-15,000) (Image)
