1842 "Turks Islands" manuscript marking on folded cover to London, rated "4" and "1/-", showing on reverse the manuscript marking of origin and arrival c.d.s. for 28 May; ex-Ludington.In January 1842 the R.M.S.P.Co. established a bimonthly West Indies mail service using Grand Turk as the distribution point for its branch services. This service was discontinued in October of the same year because of the generally unsuitable conditions in the anchorage. No post office was opened in Grand Turk until December 11, 1854. The manuscript markings were written on packet letters in transit and sorted at Grand Turk. (Image)
