Shanghai, 1861 (1 May) entire from Shanghai to Valreas, France (26.6 across the join) "Via Marseille" (25.6) with "Hong Kong/C" despatch c.d.s. (9.5) and "Comptoir D'Escompte de Paris" sender's h.s. on reverse, handstruck "9" (décimes) charge, fine usage before the Anglo-French Accountancy handstamps were received. From the Philippe Orsetti collection. Estimate 1,200 - 1,500
The previous system for exchanges of mails between Great Britain and France that entailed markings by the 1843 Anglo-French Convention article was replaced by the Anglo-French Convention of 1856, whose system of accountancy markings did not however originally include the Far East mails. The Anglo-French Convention of 1856 was expanded in May 1860 to include closed mail from British possessions in the Far East. The first set of three handstamps for Hong Kong were sent out from London in December 1860, but were retained on arrival in Bombay by the Bombay G.P.O. A replacement set of the three handstamps was sent from London in April 1861. Est. HK$1,200-1,500 (Image1)

Yokohama, 1879 (10 Sept.) Netherlands 2½c. "round-the-world" stationery card usage (uprated with Netherlands 10c.) sent westwards from Amsterdam to San Francisco (29.9), forwarded 4.10 from San Francisco to Yokohama as an enclosure in a letter (per endorsement on reverse and thus without postal markings for this leg), and finally redirected and mailed again from Yokohama (29.10) to Amsterdam (13.12) "via Brindisi" with Hong Kong 2c. pale yellowish brown and 4c. deep slate cancelled "Y1" in black, showing "Yokohama/A" c.d.s. adjacent and Hong Kong transit c.d.s. on reverse (6.11), with the last use believed to be one of only two recorded postcard usages from the British Post Office at Yokohama - both on the same day with this overpaying the 5c. postcard rate in the absence of a 1c. stamp and thus the only fully franked card as the other was franked 4c. (with the overpayment on the first card presumably meeting the deficiency) - couple tiny pin holes (one in the indicia), very fine; together with 1879 (12 Sept.) "round-the-world" Netherlands 2½c. stationery card, uprated with Netherlands 10c., sent eastwards from Amsterdam to Yokohama (27.10 Br. P.O.) "Via Brindisi" and Hong Kong (18.10) showing "Ned. Indiê/over/Brindisi" h.s. of that outward leg, resent from the Japanese post office in Yokohama (1.11) to Amsterdam (11.12) "Via San Francisco, New York & England" with pen-cancelled Japan Koban 10s. and despatch c.d.s. adjacent, small restoration at top, fine and unusual. A remarkable pair of early around-the-world cards. B.P.A. certificates (2016). S.G. Z32, Z33. Estimate 35,000 - 40,000
THE FIRST CARD IS BELIEVED THE ONLY RECORDED FULLY FRANKED POST CARD FROM THE YOKOHAMA BRITISH POST OFFICE.
Hong Kong introduced a postcard rate, as required by U.P.U. regulations, on 4 April 1879 of 3c. to Postal Union countries and 5c. if sent by the premium Brindisi route. No U.P.U. formular post cards are recorded used in Yokohama, the only Hong Kong stationery cards that could have been used there, as the British Post Office in Yokohama closed on 31 December 1879.
