1874 6d bright ultramarine on Registered cover to Cape Town tied very fine strike of the target type numeral "14" cancel of Pilgrim's Rest. Alongside we note full handstamped "Gerregistreed/ZAR No" with "224" in manuscript and "Cape Town DE 3 74" arrival strike, reduced at left with some backflap faults and damage to upper left side, address improved, an important and very scarce cover (which also serves to demonstrate that in 1874, Pilgrim's Rest lacked a date stamp), and the earliest recorded use of a target type numeral. 1877 Overprinted 1s yellow green imperforate on course paper, bisected diagonally on cover from Potchefstroom to Grahamstown, tied by target type cancel with departure 28 9 77 cds alongside, "Kimberley" and "Grahamstown" on reverse, envelope bears some staining and faults at lower right and on flap but is one of relatively few non-contrived bisect covers from either the First Republic or First British Occupation periods; ex Christie's Robson Lowe 1986 and Alan Drysdall 2006.
