1853 San Francisco, Cal. to Manchester, England. 1853 folded letter with blue "Hermann Ernst, San Francisco, Upper California" oval handstamp on front and reverse, endorsed "pr Liverpool steamer" and "Postage prepaid in New York", carried privately to N.Y. and entered the mails with red "New York, 19, Dec 14" exchange cds, Liverpool transit and receiving backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Jessup.

1857, 1858 South America to Liverpool, England. Two folded letters with dotted Liverpool double-arc datestamps, 1857 with Demerara (8.25) and London (9.14) backstamps, Liverpool (9.14) arrival cds, manuscript "2/-" shilling due rating for double packet rate, 1858 with Rio de Janeiro (5.14) and London (6.13) backstamps, Liverpool (6.14) arrival cds, manuscript "1/-" shilling due rating for single packet rate, a Very Fine pair at the single and double packet rates.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

In 1857, the Liverpool head post office introduced experimental handstamps incorporating pins, this marking had just two arcs set in pin dots to minimize the amount of damage to the actual letters, it was used on incoming mail from South America during the period of 1857-58.

Blue datelined folded letter bearing 12¢ black (36) block of four tied by strikes of "Washington, D.C., Feb 14, 1860" cds, New York exchange office red "38" cents credit to G.B., carried on Cunard Line Asia departing New York Feb. 15th to Liverpool arriving Feb. 27th, red London Paid (2.27) arrival cds; faint horizontal crease across top of block, otherwise Very Fine and spectacular double-rate treaty rate franking.
