Fascinating group of approximately 20 covers and numerous letters, notations and other ephemeral items; includes couple illustrated Lockwood Messenger System, Salem, Oregon covers showing Messenger Profile, one hand carried and other posted with 1890, 2¢ Banknote (Chauncey Lockwood was the proprietor of the company), one includes matching illustrated letterhead and another with bicycle messenger rates, also includes Messenger medal badge (probably to attached to messengers hat), another different letterhead showing Columbia Bicycle Scene backdrop of Agent For The Yost Writing Machine showing Yost typewriter, other covers with enclosures including many telegrams including Western Union Telegraph and Pacific Postal, other commercial correspondences and a photo of Lockwood as chief clerk at the State House in Salem, generally F.-V.F. or better.

(South Carolina) (Charleston) St. John's Post, 1814-63. Group of four letters endorsed per "St. John's Post" from the Mrs. Isaac Ball correspondence to Limerick, F.-V.F.

The area along the Cooper River from near Charleston to present day Moncks Corner by 1800 had many plantations. In order to conduct their business, these planters had a definite need for mail service. Since the U.S. Government did not serve their need very well, they joined together and established a private post. The post was dubbed "St. Johns Post" taking the name from the St. Johns Parish where most of them lived. US$200-300 (Image)
