Clear strike of territorial cds with matching fancy four-point star cancels tie 3¢ green strip of three and 15¢ bright orange (147+152) on 1874 cover with corner card of General A.V. Kautz from Col. James Bassell correspondence to Hong Kong, China, reverse with partial Hong Kong (3.11.75) arrival cds; some minor cover restoration, Very Fine appearance.

AN EXCEPTIONAL ARIZONA TERRITORY USE TO HONG KONG, CHINA.

August Valentine Kautz (1828-1895) was a German-American soldier and Union Army cavalry officer during the American Civil War. His exemplary military service in the War began as a captain with the 6th U.S. Cavalry during the Peninsula Campaign from April to July 1862. In the fall of 1874, General August V. Kautz arrived to become Whipple's post commander.

Booneville C.T., Nov 17. Clear strike of cds used as dateline on 1864 letter from Col. A.G. Boone with interesting content "Your favor of Agst 20 by Cape Horn & San Francisco reached me by last nights mail…The last I heard of the wool it had arrived at Council Grove Kan and would be shipped by first train to Leavenworth care of H.W. Chuk to be forwarded to you. This line of communication has and will be kept open Indian troubles to the contrary do I therefore pray sent no more letters by the Sandwich Islands as the Coach (stage) arrived in 11 o 12 days from St. Louis at my door…I love to hear from America - Peace prevails now the country is burried in snow but what the spring may bring forth with such a set of Asses to govern the country is more than I can tell - I keep 50 Garibalda Rifles ready for all emergencys and while Democracy prevails as it did at the last Election I hope to live another year but pray for Peace - Could I only hear that Little Mc (Geo. B. McClellan defeated by Lincoln 10 days before this letter was written) was Elected I would send you a Beaver tail - What is Beaver & Castor worth - I have caught 50 for amusement…" and signed "A.G. Boone", Very Fine and scarce territorial letter, this being one of only two recorded examples of this Type 1 Territorial Postmark, ex-Risvold.

Booneville, Colorado Territory was located about 20 miles east of Pueblo and 62 miles west northwest of Bent's Fort. It was established by Albert Gallatin Boone, the grandson of Daniel Boone and nephew of Col. Nathan L. Boone, U.S. Army. The post office was established Jan. 2nd 1863 with Boone as the first postmaster.

Fort Lyon, C.T., Apr 10, 1863. Bold full strike of cds (Bauer No. 1) on cover to Denver City forwarded to Big Thompson, C.T. with manuscript "Due 3" rating, franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (few nibbed perfs) canceled by target handstamp; small cover tear at top, Very Fine, an exceptional strike of this short lived postmark known used between April and July of 1863.

To protect travelers in the Arkansas Valley, Fort Wise was established near Bent's Fort. On August 2, 1862 the name was changed to Lyon.

Mountain City K.T., March 2nd. Manuscript postmark on 3¢ red (U27) buff Star Die entire canceled by manuscript "X" to Warsaw Ill., Very Fine, this postmark shows the "K.T." Kansas Territory designation two days after creation of Colorado Territory, ex-Meroni.
Estimate; $1,000 - 1,500.

By 1860, prospectors had proven the existence of profitable deposits of gold and settlement was rapidly fanning out westward into the mountains. Thirty miles to the west of Denver City, placer and lode mining on the headwaters of Clear Creek led to the establishment of post offices at Mountain City and Missouri City.

Mountain City K.T., Sept. 22, 1860. Manuscript postmark on 3¢ red (U10) buff Nesbitt entire to Kensington Conn., indicia showing second albino impression; cover with rough opening at right, otherwise Very Fine and rare Kansas Territory use, ex-Bauer.

Mountain City in Gilpin County was one of the richest mining discoveries on the site known as "Gregory Diggings". The Post Office opened on January 17, 1860 while in the Kansas Territory. The office handled thousands of letters, and in October 1869 name changed to Central City.
