Confederacy, Charleston S.C. Jun 1 1861, First Day of CSA Postal Service. Partial cds ties mostly removed U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) on cover to Aiken S.C., additional more complete strike on reverse of cover, "Held for Postage" fancy handstamp at left; part of back removed, Fine.
Estimate; $750 - 1,000.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE "HELD FOR POSTAGE" MARKING USED IN THE C.S.A. PERIOD.

As compared with the other Jun. 1st cover, this shows that the demonetized stamp was not recognized at the Charleston post office, with the stamp likely defaced before the letter was forwarded to Aiken S.C.

Neat double circle postmark with matching "Paid 5" handstamp on cover with attractive green cameo Geo W, Williams & Co, Wholesale Grocers, Charleston, S.C. advertising corner card, cover sent to Manning Court House, S.C. then postmarked "Manning, S.C, Jul 2" with manuscript "Forwarded Due 5c" to Sumter, S.C.: cover flap tear which extends slightly onto front, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, a lovely forwarded usage, ex-Calhoun.

In 1852, Geo. W. Williams & Company was established as a wholesale grocery house in Charleston, SC. George was appointed by the S.C. State Legislature during the War Between the States to procure food for the soldiers' families and the poor of Charleston.

A RARE CHARLESTON PENNY POST USE DURING THE CONFEDERATE PERIOD.

The Charleston Penny Post was an official U.S. Post Office service beginning in 1849, which is believed to have continued on a reduced scale following the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. Although wartime fees are unknown, this service cost 2¢ previously. Persons using this service normally added a street number and endorsed the cover "Penny Post".

Confederacy, San Antonio, Tex., Nov 13. Blue cds with red "Paid 5" circled rating handstamp (Dietz type I) on circa 1861 cover addressed to Hon. T. J. Wordat in Palestine, Texas; reduced a bit at right, Very Fine.

There is no soldier's endorsement but we know from the handwriting and another cover in correspondence that sender was Major Alexander M. Jackson, an officer on General Sibley's staff who served as the AAG and as Gen. Sibley's ADC during the Army of New Mexico Sibley Expedition. This cover was sent from San Antonio where troops were gathering just prior to moving out to Fort Bliss near El Paso.
