(TransA - Collins) (1857 (Apr. 7) Alexandria Va. to Hong Kong, China via London. Buff cover with "Alexandria Va. Apr 7" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "33" cent rating, red "New-York Am. Pkt. Apr 11" exchange cds and magenta "12" cent credit to G.B., carried for Collins Line by Alps from New York Apr. 11th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 25th, red London Paid (4.25) transit cds, train to Marseilles and carried by P&O Euxine Apr. 29th to Alexandria arriving May 5th, overland to Suez for P&O Bentinck departing May 9th to Galles arriving May 24th, then P&O Singapore departing May 26th to Hong Kong arriving Nov. 10th, Hong-Kong (11.11) double-arc backstamp; light tone band, F.-V.F. and rare voyage.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

"Alps" of the Cunard Line was chartered to carry the "Baltic" mails from New York on Feb. 14th 1857. "Baltic" had required extensive voyage repairs after returning to New York on Feb. 6th. On the return voyage, Alps went by way of Boston. No contract mails were carried on the return voyage as the Collins Line had made no arrangements with Cunard for this voyage.
